The Lake

Posted by on May 09 2004 | TC Journal Summer 2003

“The great fact in life, the always possible escape from dullness, was the lake. The sun rose out of it, the day began there; it was like an open door that nobody could shut. The land and all its dreariness could never close in on you. You had only to look at the lake, and you knew you would soon be free.” – Willa Cather

(Julie sent me this…thanks!)

Since the arrival of the new G5 , I’m really into finishing my TC Summer Video. It’s a collection of videos set to music from the Summer Mix 2003. Parts are set up on the Old Mission, at Pyramid Point, at the Cottage, downtown and at Building 50.

Labor Day 2003 in TC with Friends

Posted by on Sep 09 2003 | TC Journal Summer 2003

The last full week Up North…We are here…. already in relaxation mode and leaving SB behind. Tonite: Dinner at Firefly Cafe with Julie, John and Bruce.

Later:

Dinner was incredible. Good food…. great atmosphere…

Next day:

Julie, John, Steve and I spent a wonderful day driving around the Leelanau Peninsula. We spent time at the Grand Traverse Lighthouse , Leland and had lunch at Kejara’s Bridge in Lake Leelanau. (Excellent food…excellent service..don’t miss it)..

Julie, Steve and I took turns shooting pictures and video with my Sony cameras. What didn’t get caught on film was my graceful slide off of a rock and into the shallow, scraping my arm…

A very nice ranger at the Lighthouse did some first aid…and we rolled on.

Labor Day:

Labor Day was very cool for me. I had a whole handful of people who are near and dear to me with me in TC for the long weekend. We hiked on the Old Mission, drove around Leelanau, had dinner out and sat around the fire ring… it was a perfect “Up North” time and really the final chapter for Summer 2003. (the short trip in September turned out to be the last “cottage time” in TC until next year … I guess that would be an epilogue to extend the “book” metaphor.) Thanks everyone!

Finally:

Is there anyhting better than walking and chatting with a hound and a friend?

Harbour / Moby

Posted by on Aug 29 2003 | TC Journal Summer 2003

the street bears no relief
when everybody’s fighting
the street bears no relief
with light so hot and binding

I run the stairs away
and walk into the nighttime
the sadness flows like water
and washes down the heartache
and washes down the heartache

my heart is full
my heart is wide
the saddest song to play
on the strings of my heart

the heat is on its own
the roof seems so inviting
a vantage point is gained
to watch the children fighting

so lead me to the harbour
and float me on the waves
sink me in the ocean
to sleep in a sailor’s grave
to sleep in a sailor’s grave

my heart is full
my heart is wide
the saddest song to play
on the strings of my heart

my heart is full
my heart is wide, so wide
the saddest song to play
on the strings of my heart

TC in August with Andrew

Posted by on Aug 09 2003 | TC Journal Summer 2003

Andrew and I are having a wonderful time…. last year it was HOT and sunny…this year there’s a bit more rain but as Andrew would say “It’s good for the lakes…” We’ve read, ate well, rubbed some elbows and just enjoyed these relaxing days. I kid you not, the pace is different in Northern Michigan.

TC Retreat, Just Jake and I

Posted by on Jun 29 2003 | TC Journal Summer 2003

Jake and I are on retreat in TC. We got up here last night…as the sun was still slightly in the sky at 10pm! The lake looked beautiful… Happy Solstice to all who celebrate it.

Today: tea and the last 100 pages of Running with Scissors (yes, Augusten , I was fascinated by Mary Richards’ disdain for that package of steak as well…), a sushi lunch at 310, part of the TCWF network where I’m blogging now and an afternoon with jake at the lake. Tonight: dinner out with friends.

Later…

I had a BRILLIANT time…. very relaxing. I read, listened and wrote…. cleaned the cottage in preparation for our big trip next week….

I met a dog named Cooper today. Sweet puppy.

Birthday in TC

Posted by on May 24 2003 | TC Journal Summer 2003

The rain went away and the sun came out! I felt like we were chasing Spring because everything was a few weeks behind Up North: trees had fewer leaves, bushes and other foliage were not as filled out and there was still a little chill in the air.

A wonderful Birthday dinner at Amical Saturday night with the TC fellas.

Got a lot of work done around the cottage as well…

Here’s Jake and I after a day of work! (click the pic!)

(a note from 2004: This picture has become one of my all time favorites. It captures a perfect moment at the cottage. Dear Old Jake…)

More later…back to work now….

Heading North!

Posted by on May 09 2003 | TC Journal Summer 2003

Opening the Cottage for the Summer…. looking forward to returning to TC

Steve and I are heading North Friday late afternoon to open the cottage and get ready for the summer. I have a little place on Spider Lake , just outside Traverse City, MI (Look at this too . My friend Greg is going too — to install a water heater for me and to hang out. He’s going to paint the place sometime this summer… I’ll post pics when it’s painted.

My mother and father bought the cottage — last year officially named “Silver Springs” after yet another favorite song — in 1990. They actually rented it back in the 50s and 60s..and then had the opportunity to buy when Dad retired. It is tiny but is filled with good memories of my parents and the friends that have visited up there.
