Remembering Mr. Steele

Posted by on Jan 09 2004 | Building 50: Northern Michigan State Hospital

I must confess I did not know that Mr. Steele had passed away. I should get the Record Eagle at home! I read his book about being groundskeeper at the State Hospital as soon as I discovered it.

Beauty is Therapy offers an historical narrative about life at Building 50 through the years. While visiting with Heidi last week I saw her photo of the dedication of a tree and bench in Mr. Steele’s honor. I was glad to get to see the tree and bench New Year’s Day during a quick hike around Building 50 in the brisk air.

What a touching memorial to a man who cared so much about the land around Building 50…and its history.

New Year’s Eve in TC

Posted by on Jan 09 2004 | Winter Trips

Steve and I hurdled Up North late Tuesday afternoon, arriving in TC in time for a brilliant sunset. We had drinks with Bruce and matt and walked downtown a bit. It was brisk — that good clean, cold feeling you find Up North…

Wedenesday, I got up early and walked with the iPod to Espresso Bay for an English Breakfast tea. It was relaxing…no one was out and about yet….
Wednesday we spent some time zipping around TC – out to the cottage — where we walked on the frozen ice of Spider Lake! — and to Building 50, where we bumped into Heidi Johnson! It was great to see her and talk Macs, printers and photography. She has some incredible new work hanging in the hallway outside her office.

Downtown Traverse City was still decked out for the holidays. We had a great lunch at Amical of Tomato Basil soup and Whitefish pate. I ran by Epiphany Salon for some hair stuff. I’d never been there before…

New Year’s Eve we had dinner with Bruce and company and enjoyed a fine evening.

Joining the Orkut TC Community

Posted by on Jan 09 2004 | TC Tech: This town is WIRED

Jeff at the TC Library sent me an invitation to join him at the online social network Orkut. I did and it’s pretty darn cool. Thanks!

I joined the Traverse City community, made up as of this writing of 5 souls, who might post to forums or e-mail. I also found one of the other members of the community to have some darn neat pics of Front street in the snow. Very nice…
